But if you grew up in a small town or you simply enjoy basketball, you may very well enjoy this episode. It's a little long I'll tell you that up front, because it's a complete basketball game. This is really intended for people in the Kentucky County where I grew up.
Speaker 1:This past weekend I kind of stumbled into a treasure that my mom had left behind when she could not attend our high school basketball games. She would record them onto cassette tapes and I happened to find about three or four of these cassette tapes and I thought, hmm, I'm going to take a listen and I'm just going to post it for the people in my home county who might want to listen. In. This particular tape is the final game that McQuarrie County High School would ever play as a basketball team. You see, in the fall of 1978, the two high schools in my county Pine Aude High School and McQuarrie County High School would consolidate into a brand new school. Just so happens that I was part of that first graduating class of McQuarrie Central High School, as well as my wife Linda, which is where we met Story for another time. This basketball game is the opening game of the 47th District Basketball Tournament in the state of Kentucky. The game would find Pinot taking on McQuarrie County. These two schools were rival schools and they did not play each other during the season. Often they would find themselves matched up in the tournament. They had met the previous year in the opening round of the tournament and Pinot had lost. Pinot was really looking for a comeback game. They had a brand new coach that year and again, it would be their final year as a high school. I have really great memories of the names that I heard on this cassette tape.
Speaker 1:When you grow up in a small town, you pretty much know everybody and everybody knows you. As you can imagine, there's positives and negatives to that. Of course. If I stepped out of line and somebody saw me, they would be quick into the grocery store and they'd say Wilma, danny's riding that motorcycle too fast. But growing up in a small town, it's a place where people look out for each other. It's a place where people take care of each other. Churches were packed. There were businesses on every corner, seems like this is a game from the winter of 1978, guessing it was played around the end of February, maybe early March.
Speaker 1:If you don't know anything about Kentucky basketball, it's divided into 16 regions. It doesn't matter if you're a big school, little school, you may end up in what's called the Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament, which has been played in Rupp Arena since 1979. In mid-March it brings the 16 best teams from the state together to play the final tournament of the season. I do hope you enjoy this episode. If you want to listen to a fun basketball game that was recorded 47 years ago on a little cassette recorder, hang on for the next hour. You might enjoy it. And for those people in McQuarrie County, I do hope you enjoy this. Here we go.
Speaker 3:Tip-off time, cool night in Monticello and a hot night in the Wayne County gym. Why Not Dragons and the McQu go Tip-off time record of 12 wins and 8 losses, tied up with a record of 13 wins and 8 losses. Both teams have the quickness and the long shots of the guard, the long shots and the quickness of the forward and the inside stability of the big man. That's right, tim. The game will probably be won on defense tonight. I think the game will definitely be won by the defense. Which team chose the better defense? We'll walk away this afternoon with a victory.

Speaker 3:Right after this, wweqo, woodley City, kentucky, mccrory County Indians and the Pine Island Dragons square off this afternoon in the opening round of the 47th District Basketball Tournament. Tim, the atmosphere is ripe for a good ballgame this afternoon. How about some starting lineups? Thank you, troy. First of all, let's go down to Macquarie County Indians, who will be considered the visiting team tonight. We're coming into the ballgame once again with a record of 12-8. We have it the two guards, jimmy Johnson and Tim Frazier. At center will be David Taylor. The two forwards will be Darrell Waters and Stevie Roberts. Now going down, pineknot, who will be considered the home team. Pinot, once again with a record of 13 and 8. We have at the two guards, jerry Stephens, roger Daugherty. At center, the pivot man, we have Robert Jones. The two forwards tonight, tim Jones and Mike Ducken, both of the ten men that will be facing it. And Pinot is the team that's got a scar to replace. Last year in the first round they played McCrory County and lost it. Here they've got a rematch the following year. It's going to be a game. Okay, tim. The Lidhouse ratings released today in the Courier-Journal shows that the district is pretty well evenly matched. Wayne County is on top they have a 64.6 rating. Pinot has a 58.0. Mccrory a 54.3. That shows you what kind of ball game we're going to have this afternoon. Pine Island and McCurry only four points separated on here. 58.0 for Pine Island, 54.3 for McCurry Should be a good ball game and Monticello with a rating of 38.6,. But they've come on in the last half of the season and knocked off Somerset here just a little bit earlier, and so it should be a tough district this year. Tim we just a little bit earlier, and so it should be a tough district this year, tim. We should see some good ballgames here in the 47th district this year. Both teams are at midcourt. We're about ready to start the 47th district here in 1978, pine Hot Dragons a record of 13-8. Mccrory County Indians a record of 12-8. Troy Michaels for the first half of play-by-play. Good ballgame, tim. You can already tell the atmosphere is filled with excitement here.
Speaker 3:The Pynot Dragons, mccreary County Indians. Robert Jones will jump it up against Darrell Waters to start this ball game. 47th District opening round. For the boys. Chip is up, controlled the backcourt by the Dragons. Pynot has it. Darnie goes to Stephens. Stephens 15-footer good. Pynot goes on top 2-0 for Curry. Kenny with the ball. Johnson has the ball for the Indians. He's a playmaker.
Speaker 3:Finot opens up in a zone defense. Johnson drives top of the key, goes to Frazier over on the side. Curry Kenny, going to the right of your dial. Johnson 15-footer no good. Giddy's on rebound, tuck it in the middle, lost it. Here comes the Dragons. Duncan has it. Duncan goes all the way to the basket, goes up with it, put it up. No good. Rebound by David Taylor. Big rebound for Taylor. Cutter was high for that one. Johnson's got it again. Johnson brings it across the timeline, 2-0. Parnot on top. Frazier has it On the right side, goes top to Johnson. Johnson looking, comes to Taylor. It's stolen away but Johnson gets it back. Now he goes to David Taylor. David Taylor way outside Around to Steve Roberts 20-foot jumper from the right corner. No good, jerry Stephens Rebound for the Dragons.
Speaker 3:Here comes Finot Stephens drives. He's hopped over there by Frazier. He'll shoot anyway from 15. No good, tipped up by Robert Jones and he put it up and in. Jones high for the rebound. He tipped it up and in.
Speaker 3:You can tell by the background noise a big crowd here tonight. It's not a sellout but a big crowd. Johnson has it to Frazier. Frazier comes back out front to Johnson. To Frazier right corner shot. No good. High for the rebound, taylor, he lost it. Roberts put it. It back up and in for McCreary County 4-2,. Finot on top. Steve Roberts, the freshman for the Indians, put it back up and in.
Speaker 3:Stevens goes to Duncan. Robert Jones will shoot from the corner. No good, and we've got a foul on the rebound. Who's the foul? Foul is on number 40, steve Roberts, first foul of the ball game. A little excited, getting a little bit tongue-tied here. Robert Jones will go to the line? I believe no, he won't. Pineout will play it in under the Rome basket. Daugherty gets it into Duncan 20-footer no good, rebound. Robert Jones put it back up and bounces twice. No good. Tipped up by Tim Jones. In the end Tim Jones with a fine tip 6-2,. Pineout goes on top. Steal by the Dragons.
Speaker 3:Johnson's got it to Dardy. Johnson bats it off of Dardy out of bounds. Oh, they give it to Pineau. It'll be Pineau's ball under their own basket. Dardy to play it in. Dardy gets it in to Robert Jones. Jones looking for someone out front. Now he comes out to Dardy with it. Dardy tries to go into Tim Jones' bad pass. Johnson picks it off.
Speaker 3:Here comes the Indians running 6-2, 540 to go in the first quarter. Johnson will shoot from 15. No good, battle for the rebound Lost out of bounds. It'll be Finot's fault. Full court press by the Indians.
Speaker 3:Jardy has it, trying to go to Duncan. He's open down there. He gets it. Tandem a query quickly back. Duncan drives in the lane, goes up at a 10-footer. Good, finot goes on top 8-2 with 5.20 to go in the first quarter.
Speaker 3:Here comes Indians Roberts has it. He'll shoot from 20 feet in the corner. No good, rebound. Tim Jones to fine off. He's got it running but McCreary County is back Now he holds up, gets it to Jerry Stevens. Stevens drives around, Roberts goes in the lane and he's fouled. Who's the foul going to be on? Foul is on number 33, david Taylor from McCreary County with the timeout. So we're going to take a timeout with the score.
Speaker 3:Pine out eight, mccreary County two. Okay, pine out has the ball into the Rome basket. Darty goes into Duncan with it. Duncan goes to Darty, 15-footer in the corner. No good, lost out of bounds by the Indians. They say it came off of Steve Roberts. He disagreed with the call. I couldn't see it from here. Darty has it. He goes to Duncan in the corner. Duncan goes inside, stolen by David Taylor, he gives it to Johnson. Here come the Indians. Indians on attack. Johnson has it, he drives in the lane, passes off to Frazier 20-footer. Good, nothing but strange music for Tim Frazier 8-4.
Speaker 3:Finale on top Jerry Stevens brings it across Him and Darnie working at the guards for the Dragons, tim Jones and Ducken at the forward. Robert Jones working the middle. Stevens drives in the lane. Now he comes out to the side looking for someone. Stevens comes out front to Tim Jones with it. Jones goes into Robert Jones. Passed over his hand. It goes out of bounds. It'll be McCray counting the ball 8-4,. Final on top 4-12.
Speaker 3:To go in the first quarter. Jimmy Johnson has it across the line for the Indians. Johnson Goes to Steve Roberts 20-footer on him. Way, no good. Rebound Robert Jones. He's got it out running. He's leading the fast break himself. Passes off Nice pass to Mike Duckett, put it up, missed it. Jones with the rebound Put it up, missed it, but he was fouled. Daugherty finds the run, but the Indians are back. He'll give it to Jerry Stephens and they'll set set it up.
Speaker 3:Stevens and Darty control the offense for the Dragons, both of them seniors. Why not have five seniors out here? Got a foul? The foul's gonna be on number five, jimmy Johnson. Speaker 3:To go in the first quarter. I should say. Frazier has it around to Roberts Roberts steps on the baseline. It'll be Pine off the ball, guardian Stevens at the guard. No substitutions in the ballgame. Yet Stevens has it across the line Looking for someone inside.
Speaker 3:He's being guarded by Tim Frazier. He goes to Mike Duncan. Duncan goes off to Robert Jones. Nice move on the baseline. Put it up, missed it. Rebound Tim Jones. He dribbles once. Put it up, missed it. Tipped up by Duncan, no good. And now there's a foul on Darrell Waters. Tim's letting him play inside. It's rough in there. They're definitely letting him play inside. That's a foul on Darrell Waters. That's his first. So Mike Duncan will go to the line for one and a bonus 239 to go in the first quarter. Duncan will have one and one. Takes a long look, concentrates first. One's up good, 9-4, probably not on top. We're in the first quarter. Duncan will have another one coming. It's up and good. No, it don't rims and comes out.
Speaker 3:David Taylor rebounds for the Indians. Gives it to Johnson. Johnson brings it all across, sits up to play, goes to Frazier on the right side. Frazier dribbles once, comes back out front to Waters, around to Roberts Roberts, goes in the corner. Johnson's 10-footer on the way. Good Nine to six, quite a long shot. Daugherty has it. They try to go inside to Jones. They throw it away again and.
Speaker 2:Johnson has it, johnson brings it across the line Goes to Frazier.
Speaker 3:Frazier to Roberts, 20-footer on its way. Good, 10-8. We got a thriller 144 to go in the first quarter. Four points for Steve Roberts. Jerry Stevens has it across the line. He's being matched up by Tim Frazier right now. Stevens goes to darty darty, looking inside can't find no one. Goes Tim Jones he drives baseline, goes up with a double pop. Oh, move in there, put it up and in Tim Jones double pump on the baseline, laid it up and in 120 to go in the first quarter. Jones averaging 5.4 points a game.
Speaker 3:4 is the dragon. There's a pass almost lost by Roberts. He gets it back, goes to Johnson in the lane and they call Johnson for steps. Johnson walks with it. Roger Dardy gets it in to Jerry Stevens. Stevens calls for play number four. He's being guarded again by Frazier. He gets it across the line. Stevens goes to Duncan. Duncan on the left side, drives the baseline, lofts it out of bounds. They'll call a foul on David Taylor for pushing. That's Taylor's third. Taylor picks up number three quickly and Robert Jones is hurt. Robert Jones is down on the floor. I believe it's his ankle, this one with an ankle injury. We certainly hope it's not serious and hope to see him back in the ballgame. Mike Jeffers is in for Jones. Jeffers is in the ballgame for Robert Jones Ducking at the line for one in the bonus. Back to second quarter. Robert Jones is still on the bench with the ankle injury. No word yet from the bench what it is. We hope it's just a little slight turn and he'll be back. Tip is up and controlled by the Indians. Tim Frazier gets it to Johnson. Not after a little trouble, though. Tim Jones had to jump center for the Dragons Waters got to tip. Frazier saves it into Johnson and the Indians are on the attack. Johnson has it, top of the key, goes to Roberts Roberts, starts to shoot, brings it back after Frazier Frazier to Johnson. He'll have another one coming. Mike Ross will be in the game as soon as there is a break and he'll be in for Stevie Roberts, but Roberts is shooting the free throw so he'll have to wait. Speaker 3:Stevens calls for play number four. He's being guarded by Mark Ross. Around to Daugherty, to Jerry Stevens, to Robert Jones. The big man shoots. No good, stevens rebounds Taken away by Jimmy Johnson. He'll hold it up. Johnson will bring it on across 18 to 15. Dragons on top to Ross. Mark Ross, looking inside, Comes out to Jimmy Johnson. Finite on top 234 to go and a half. Johnson has it around the rod. Johnson breaks through they don't see him Around to Waters. Waters drives. He's fouled by Duncan. That's number two on Duncan. Daugherty, being double teamed, being pressured, goes inside of Steven. Steven drives, drives, gets to Tim. Jones goes up for the shot. Eight seconds left, johnson runs. Six seconds left, he drives, gets over to Ross. Ross will put it up. No good, stephens rebounds and the buzzer in. It's over. We'll be back with the final comments right after this.
